Congratulations to the recipient of the 2023 Scholarship for Diversity in Media, Jasper Smith!
I was beyond elated to learn that I was selected as the recipient of the 2023 Diversity in Media Scholarship. Thanks to The Chronicle of Higher Education, I will be graduating from Howard University debt-free this spring! When I learned about this scholarship on LinkedIn, I knew immediately that I wanted to apply. As a young Black woman, it is so important to feel supported in this industry. It is an even better feeling when publications are equally as committed to creating spaces for journalists of color to thrive. Winning this scholarship allows me to focus more on my journalism, leading my school's newspaper and getting one step closer to obtaining my degree without the burden of financial hardship and tuition costs. Not only am I even more excited for my future, but I am greatly motivated to finish my last year at Howard University as strong as ever.

Congratulations to the recipient of the 2024 Diversity in Journalism Scholarship and Internship, Amelia Benavides-Colón!
I am honored to be selected as The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Diversity in Media scholarship recipient. As a student journalist in Detroit, I’ve spent the last four years immersed in the world of local news, understanding the vital role citizens play in government oversight. Through my education and experience leading Wayne State University’s student newspaper, I’ve learned firsthand the importance of strong diversity in newsrooms, and I am proud to be part of a program dedicated to making space for journalists of all backgrounds. I look forward to bringing the perspective of an inner-city Latina to The Chronicle’s newsroom this summer and expanding upon coverage of marginalized communities across the country.
- Amelia Benavides-Colón
Amelia is a recent graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She graduated with her B.A. in Journalism with a minor in Global Studies. During her time on campus, Amelia served as Editor-in-Chief of ‘The South End’, Wayne State University’s first weekly campus newspaper. Amelia will be joining The Chronicle this summer 2024 for the editorial reporting internship program.

What inspired me to apply for this scholarship was The Chronicle of Higher Education’s mission statement, which included “diversity,”. “One of my main goals is to give back and create successful programs for African Americans to increase the number of Black people in the media industry. This opportunity aligned with my essential goal of making the media industry diverse. This scholarship will help me throughout my education journey at Howard University by allowing me to continue gaining new opportunities that will build my character, perfect my craft in journalism, and aid me in making wise decisions about my future endeavors.
- Robert D. Hill
Robert is a rising junior at Howard University in Washington, D.C, pursuing his B.A. in Broadcast Journalism. Robert has experience in several campus organizations such as the Howard University Spotlight, a news platform, serving as the editor-of-footage and livestream.
